From "Steve Scotten "
Subject: Focus of this group
Some of you may have noted that although initially the idea was to make this specifically a Model 250 support group, I did not name it "Model250-users" but instead "rs6k-users." Personally, I am a Model 250 owner, and I have no other RS/6000. The model 250 has some personal significance to me as well as historical significance: it's the first production computer to ship with a PowerPC processor, predating the Power Macs by three or four months. I'd seen a number of queries about the Model 250 when I suggested the formation of this group, and so I suggested that it be specifically for the 7011-250. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that we have a lot in common with a couple of Bull models, and other microchannel-based RS/6000s. So I named the group to be more inclusive. My thinking is that this group should be peer support for "folks like me", people using these machines because we have some fondness or enthusiasm for them, not because (or at least not exclusively because) they have to for their job. If no one has any objection, I'd like to write something like that into the description of the group. If the group gets to be large or starts to have tremendous traffic, we can worry about narrowing the focus then, but I'm not guessing that's really going to be much of a problem for us. I mean, hey, if some eccentric rich guy is using a p-series 690 for a home computer, that's exactly the kind of person we want to hear stories from, even if our hardware has little in common with his. Right? Steve -- Steven M. Scotten <s@p90.net>
