Subject: So... whaddya got?
Now that we've got a few people on the list, I'm curious about what kinds of machines you've got and what you're using them for. I was already running a couple of mailing lists on majordomo on a Red Hat Linux machine when I found the Model 250 I have now on eBay. You can read a little bit about my history with the Model 250 in the list archives: http://rs6k-users.p90.net/lists/displayarticle.shtml?msgid=14064 It took me several months to get it working, and my friends thought I was crazy, but eventually I got my RS/6000 running and stable enough so that I replaced that Linux box and ran my mailserver and mailing lists on 'dana'. That's most of what dana does today; it runs mailing lists like this one. I also use it for my own personal email in the shell. I do have the IBM HTTPD Server running, but in the interest of not putting too much strain on the machine or my bandwidth, I run the website and archives on my ISP. About all the content I actually serve from webserver is the pictures from when I first got the machine home: http://dana.p90.net/rs6k/ I've never connected a keyboard or a monitor to my RS/6000; when I installed AIX (the drive was wiped when I got it) I did so through a serial cable to a PC. I've thought about getting a real serial terminal for it, but right now I have an OS/2 machine serving as a dumb terminal, and of course most of the time I just ssh in over the network, or occasionally I'll run X applications using an X server I have on my Windows 2000 machine. I'm not a sysadmin by trade. I don't have tremendous technical ability. Running an RS/6000 Model 250 was just something I wanted to do and I stuck with it and asked enough questions and found the right people to ask that eventually it came together. I've been pretty lucky, and there's always more to learn about it. So what do the rest of you do with your RS/6000s? You have them at home, or at work, or both? And what are they doing for you?
